Monmouthshire County Council has invested in wireless fire systems as part of a county-wide upgrade to schools and education facilities.

The Project

As with many local authorities, Monmouthshire County Council has limited opportunities to carry out major system upgrade works without causing disruption to staff, pupils and building interiors. The wire-free fire alarm systems were therefore an ideal choice for the Council, as expensive fire-rated cable was eliminated together with the hugely increased installation time and disturbance to the fabric of the buildings.

"Hilston Park Outward Bound Center was one of the many educational facilities updated with a wireless fire system."

The clients Response

Commenting on the project, the Senior Maintenance Manager at Monmouthshire County Council said "One of the most important factors for choosing a wire free fire alarm system was the speed at which they could be installed. As with most schools there is only a short timeframe when the buildings are unoccupied. Five schools and Hilston Park Outward Bound centre were all completed in the first month."

Systems Installed

A total of 38 System 5000 FirePoint panels and 2450 devices were installed across the county by our trained engineers at ADC Fire System Ltd. Many of these panels are interconnected using a radio-network for protecting sites with multiple buildings. A wide range of devices were used to satisfy the diverse environments found in schools, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, combined detector/sounders, sounders, sounder/strobes, call points and input/output units.

"Eleven sites have so far been completed including infant, primary and secondary schools, education centres and a community centre."

5000 FirePoint fire sensors are based on established industry designs, have no external aerials and have built-in replaceable power packs with up to a 5-year life. System wide power management facilities and advanced in-device electronics ensures battery replacement can be scheduled within normal maintenance routines, reducing operational costs. The elimination of expensive fire-rated cable means the wire-free sensors can be typically installed in less than 10 minutes.
